The Casino Forum d'art contemporain has reopened, so we thought it would be nice to have a look for this month's sketchcrawl.

If the weather is nice, we can also sketch in the surroundings in the city.

Panorama sur la ville 6 mars 2016

Nous nous sommes payés le luxe de nous installer ce dimanche 6 mars dans le café/bar au sommet de l'hôtel Sofitel Grand-Ducal et de profiter du magnifique panorama sur la ville de Luxembourg. Se concentrer sur ce paysage impressionnant dans la lumière tamisée, peuplée de murmures, en rythmant le dessin de pauses café, fut un très grand plaisir.

Du plateau de thé posé sur l'appui de fenêtre dessiné par Béliza ( voir "Overlooking the city") émane ce calme méditatif et l'imagination peut habiter le vide derrière la fenêtre en plongeant dans la vallée ou en effleurant les horizons urbains.

Last Sunday, we met with Urban Sketchers Luxembourg at the Observatoire, the bar of hotel Sofitel.

I had heard that it offered an amazing view of the city, but I had never been there before. I was not disappointed.

Everyone was drawn to the windows and tried their best to sketch the cityscape.

Personally, I am not used to that exercise at all and I found it very difficult, getting lost in too many details at some point.

There was a moment when I realized that I would never get to the kind of result I was expecting, so I just started to try out different things, playing with colour, ink and pencil. It was much more fun this way.

We do live in a beautiful city!

After the difficult landscape, I took a "break" and sketched the beautiful tea set in front of me. It really felt like I was breathing easily again. I'm definitely not at ease with big city scapes yet.

It's interesting how a change of subject can help me get much more playful with my sketches. I felt much looser to do a quick detail of one of the main bridges, the Pont Viaduc.

As I mentioned, this was a very unusual exercise for me, but one I think I will repeat in the future. Specially at this location.

Sunday's sketchcrawl was not quite a crawl, but there was definitely a lot of sketching going on, with many great productions.

Urban Sketching au Conservatoire !

Inédit ! C'est au Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg que se déroulera, le samedi 27 février, la prochaine session de dessin architectural à main levée organisée par le LUCA et les architectes bénévoles Jean-Paul Carvalho et Arnaud De Meyer ! 

Les dessinateurs novices ou chevronnés pourront ressortir blocs et crayons pour apprendre et échanger, mais également pour découvrir sous un angle inédit un bâtiment emblématique du paysage culturel luxembourgeois.

Petits et grands sont les bienvenus à ce workshop gratuit, il ne faut qu'un peu de matériel : support rigide, feuilles blanches dinA4, bloc ou cahier de croquis, crayon, feutre...

Ping...

... and pong!

I should probably say table tennis, but ping pong sounds so much more fun!

For our sketchcrawl in February we met at the National Sports Centre, d'Coque, in Kirchberg.

It is the perfect place to take shelter from the cold, the wind and the rain, and it offers the possibility to sketch a more sportive environment.

That day, a table tennis competition was taking place, a great opportunity to try our hands at sketching a sports event.

At first I tried to sketch one or the other player in particular, but it quickly became apparent that it would be more frustrating than fun, so I focused purely on very fast action drawings.

I have to admit I'm not a particular fan of table tennis, but watching the games was pretty interesting.

After a while, I noticed that most players, even some of the younger ones, have their own styles, some more theatrical than others, specially when serving.

Denis invited us all for a drink at the refreshment stalls to celebrate his birthday. Perfect moment to share our impressions and watch some of the games.

In the end, I was so engrossed in trying to capture the action that I didn't even find out who won the competition. 

I did, however, learn that ping pong can be a pretty impressive sport.

In or out of the game?

Our February sketchcrawl at the Coque (National Table Tennis Championship) was, in all its feverish movement, a moment of reflexion. It struck me how impossible it is to be in and out of the game at the same time.

Sketching means taking a distance to observe and catch the movement of the players, the colours, the public, the hall. Sketching means to go over to another place in the hall because the point of view of the tennis table is more interesting or the spotlight falls better on the players. Sketching means being frustrated because just at the moment you 'catch' a player the game is over, or the players switch sides...

Following the game however means feeling the tension building up, applauding a well placed shot, shouting as a supporter, making comments on the umpire, having a favourite player...

We spent the whole afternoon sketching in the Coque, observing and sketching the game and the players but I must confess that I'm at a loss for words when asked who finally won the championship!

Coque le 7 février 2016

Quel vent ce dimanche! Personne n'avait envie de dessiner dehors. Nous nous sommes retrouvés dans le hall d'entrée du Centre national sportif et culturel "d'Coque"  au plateau de Kirchberg. Cet ensemble a été construit en deux temps par l'architecte français, prix de Rome, Roger Taillibert. Tout d'abord le centre aquatique en béton puis de nombreuses années plus tard les halles de sport en structure bois.
Nous avons choisi démocratiquement d'aller dessiner dans la halle qui accueillait les championnats nationaux individuels seniors de tennis de table. Je n'étais pas particulièrement intéressée par ce sport et je voulais dessiner la structure de la halle. Je me suis d'abord concentrée sur un des terrains.

Mais en voyant les concurrents bouger, la rapidité, la précision de jeu, l'architecture, que j'ai d'habitude tendance à dessiner, commençait à disparaître pour laisser la place à la "chasse au mouvement". Dessiner le plus vite possible pour saisir le geste, la posture…la balle perd de son importance, vivre le mouvement, la position dans le coup de crayon en commençant par les matchs

puis ceux des filles.

Ensuite nous nous sommes retrouvés pour une pause lors de laquelle Denis nous a offert à boire pour fêter son anniversaire et nous avons échangé nous impressions et partagés nos dessins.

La buvette offre depuis la galerie une vue plongeante sur les terrains et les joueurs. Les spectateurs toujours plus nombreux y boivent à la santé des vainqueurs, regardent les derniers matchs et peut-être prolongent encore un peu la fin de semaine avant de braver le mauvais temps.

Une belle après-midi pour les sportifs du crayon!

Parcourir l'exposition "Eppur si muove" dans les entrailles tamisées du musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean, de Ieoh Ming Pei. Derrière "The Frictionless Sled" de Chris Burden, va et vient d'une pièce de plastic orange, ponctué de soupirs, coulissant sur un rail quasi immatériel, s'ouvre une fenêtre sur la place de l'Europe. Deux absurdités en concurrence: l'accumulation de bâtiments qui ne parvient pas à animer le vide d'une place ou la sobriété exacerbée d'un mouvement inutile.

Puis au détour d'un mur abstrait apparaît, gigantesque la "Fatamorgana, Méta-Harmonie IV" de Jean Tinguely qui au rythme du bon vouloir des visiteurs, écrase l'ambiance feutrée et muséale par sa soudaine mise en marche tonitruante.

Le regard s'évade vers le haut dans l'intervalle où l'exubérance du mouvement grinçant rencontre la maîtrise policée d'une structure architecturale se voulant filigrane.

J'ai malheureusement dû quitter le musée un peu trop tôt pour partager avec les autres urban sketchers ces moments quasi méditatifs. Ce sera pour une autre fois!
